News to me, that is. BitTorrent from Bram Cohen has been out there for well over a year. Written in Python, open source. BitTorrent allows a new item to be distributed rapidly throughout a huge network from an underpowered server. It works by putting all the downloaders to work uploading to each other. The magic is in keeping track of it all under p2p drop-in/drop-out conditions. It works. It is simple for the users. See the Bit Conjurer homepage. Great articles on the guy's coding techniques there. Very inspiring.

BitTorrent is way cool. I installed it a while back, but I must admit, I haven't actually downloaded anything with it.

Is it your thought to do similar things? To have data be stored in many places simultanously, and assembled from any number of those when needed?

BitTorrent looks very useful for flooding an InterMix network with a popular item. Just the ticket for a network that will publish many popular items for global distribution daily.

Are you thinking we might speed a download by pulling the item in from many sources at once? If I understand how it works, BitTorrent actually slows down the download by using bandwidth for simultaneous upload.

Actually simultaneous upload doesn't show down the download, as it is full duplex. I.e. you can transfer at full speed in both directions without them taking anything much away from either other.

A BitTorrent scheme makes most sense if we're talking big files of course. But also it removes the penalty for storing something popular. And it greatly increases the likelyhood that one finds the item one wants available.
